Andrew R. Kreider, 87, South Annville Township, a prominent Annville businessman, died at 6 p.m. Sunday in Polyclinic Hospital, Harrisburg, a few hours after he was admitted.
He originated the hosiery business in Annville which later expanded into five mills. For many years, he was director and vice-president of the Annville National Bank, which later became a branch of the Lebanon Valley National Bank.
He was a son of the late Andrew and Emma Miller Kreider and was born in the Kreider homestead at Main and Railroad Sts. in Annville.
In 1892 he was graduated from Lebanon Valley College and then attended the Engineering School at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and the Pierce Business School in Philadelphia. He was an avid sports fan, both as a participant and a spectator.
After completing schooling, he had a brief venture in the lumber business in Somerset County before returning to Annville to open his hosiery business.
He retired from business in 1956 and the hosiery plant was sold to Lebanon Valley College and converted into the present science building. None of the five plants is in existence any longer.
He was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church of Annville; Lodge 226, F and A. M. of Lebanon, and a life member of the Rajah Temple, Reading.
His wife, the late Winifred Stover Kreider, died in 1931.
Surviving are four sons, A. James and Stanley B., both of Annville; Fred S., of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Thomas C., at home. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a sister, Miss Anna E. Kreider of Annville, and a brother, Edwin Kreider of Lebanon.
