Dr. Henry L. Kreider, 75, of Elizabethtown, after a struggle with leukemia, but with the assurance of the Resurrection, died on November 20, 2006.
Born in Lancaster on January 25, 1931, he was the son of the late John Hoffman and Anna Kuhns Kreider, and the husband of Edna Long Kreider, with whom he recently celebrated 40 years of marriage. He grew up on a farm in Mount Joy Township, was a graduate of Messiah Junior College, Elizabethtown College and Hahnemann Medical College. He served an internship and residency at Lancaster General Hospital. From 1961 to 1963, he worked as a physician in Jordan and Algeria under the Mennonite Central Committee as an alternative to military service.
After their marriage, they spent a year in Haiti with MCC, at Hospital Grande Riviere du Nord, and then served for nine years (1968 to 1977) at Madhipura Christian Hospital in Bihar State, India, with Brethren in Christ World Missions. Following this, Dr. Kreider was in Family Practice in Elizabethtown until 2002. He was School Physician at the Elizabethtown Area Schools from 1978 to 1998, and Medical Director at HCR ManorCare in Elizabethtown from 1978 to 2001.
He was a long-time member and deacon in the Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, volunteered with the Lancaster Area Victim/Offender Reconciliation Program, Water Street Rescue Mission Clinic, the Elizabethtown Youth Aid Panel and the Pennsylvania Prison Society. He was a member of the Lancaster City and County Medical Society.
His wife, Edna Long Kreider, survives him, as well as a son, David Kreider, husband of Lois Kreider, Elizabethtown; a daughter, Deborah Groening, wife of Gerald Groening, Brandon, Manitoba, Canada; four grandchildren; a brother, Dr. John Kuhns Kreider, husband of Ethel Wolgemuth, Manheim; and a sister, Lois Jean, wife of Rev. Roy Peterman, Manheim.
A Life Celebration Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 25 at 11 a.m. at the Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High Street. Friends may visit the family at the church on Friday, November 24 from 6 - 8 p.m. There will be no viewing.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to Madhipura Christian Hospital, c/o the Elizabethtown BIC Church. Fred F. Groff Inc., 234 W. Orange St., Lancaster is in charge of arrangements.
